<image:title>International Screenings of ba(ME) - AT HOME: RETHINKING INTERNATIONALISM I The first of our online conversations brings together industry professionals to discuss the experience of being an international artist as part of our Refuge series.</image:title>
<image:caption>Join us for the first of a two-part discussion Rethinking Internationalism, exploring what it really means to be an international artist working in the UK today. How have recent events shaped what we consider internationalism to be and who has the privilege of being considered ‘international’? The discussion will be chaired by Dr Idil Akinci-Perez, with choreographer Julie Ann Minaai, Maria Aberg, director of Projekt Europa, theatre-maker Yasmeen Audisho Ghrawi and producer Taghrid Choucair-Vizoso. As part of Refuge, artists, practitioners, academics and community leaders from across the globe come together in conversation, offering their perspectives on themes of internationalism, migration, displacement, inclusion and climate justice. The Refuge series is supported by British Council, Edinburgh Futures Institute at the University of Edinburgh and Claire and Mark Urquhart. Made possible through the PLACE programme</image:caption>

<image:title>Upcoming Works & Creations - 2 DECEMBER 2023 OKAGE SAMA DE : SHIROI</image:title>
<image:caption>What happens to our identity through the experience of immigration? How does one reconnect with a cultural heritage that has faded through generational integration? OKAGE SAMA DE (I am what I am because of you) journeys into the unknown in the search for self and reconnection with one’s past. SHIROI 白い refers to the shade of white - when all the colours come together to form the possibilities: the creative potential of the washi paper before paint touches it; the shade that invites light and shadow to dance together on the shōji doors and lanterns, and the potential to write your own story, pathway and journey. Celebrate generations of cultural ancestry and witness the mastery of traditional Japanese art forms in this live dance and musical performance by international award-winning Japanese artists Julie Ann Minaai, Noriko Tadano, Toshi Sakamoto and Junko Azukawa. Combining contemporary dance, the traditional Japanese shamisen, powerful Wadaiko drumming, and beautiful Sumi-e ink paintings, OKAGE SAME DE is an explosive exploration of culture, identity and journey of the self. Supported by Immigration Museum and City of Melbourne. Performance: Saturday, 2 December 2023, 2pm and 6pm at the Immigration Museum Book Tickets: HERE</image:caption>

<image:title>Upcoming Works & Creations - 9 - 12 NOVEMBER 2022 BORO</image:title>
<image:caption>BORO is a commission for the Bachelor of Fine Arts Dance students’ graduation season. ‘This year’s graduating students have experienced unprecedented challenges throughout their degree as they navigated the changes brought about by the Global Pandemic. Moving between dancing in a virtual studio and dancing in real life, they have emerged as artists with a multiplicity of skills who understand how to communicate their craft regardless of the barriers encountered. In these strange times their creative and critical capacities bring attention to the urgencies of the present and the power of dance to connect across times, spaces and differences. In this Triple Bill, we draw attention to the kinetic as primary to how we shape-shift through life stages and states of emergence. Three new contemporary works have been made on and with Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) working in collaboration with Bachelor of Fine Arts (Design and Production) students: Guest Choreographer Lucy Guerin’s Splinter Group; Hutchinson First Nations Fellow, Ngioka Bunda-Heath’s Footprints and Resident Choreographer Julie Ann Minaai’s BORO. Delving into distinct worlds of the choreographic imagination, these works explore group synergy, rhythmic complicity, falling, shape-shifting and the traces we leave behind. They speak through the corporeal and ancestral imagination to inscribe mutable and changing worlds within a condition of continuous dancing.’ Stage Performance: 9 - 12 November 2022 Space 28</image:caption>

<image:title>Guest Talks & Discussions - Generative Dancing Roundtable Series</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr. Elena Benthaus @tiny_office_dances from the PopMoves community and Julie Minaai are facilitating a roundtable / podcast live recording session as part of the Generative Dancing Roundtable series organised by @vca.dance and @dancehouse.melb on “Glocal Street Dance Cultures in Australia” with incredible guest speakers Efren Pamilacan @ef__ founder of City Sessions and Cofounder of Cypher Culture Bgirl Rachael ‘Raygun’ Gunn @raygun_aus of ‘Vanguards of Style' and '143 Liverpool Street Familia' Amelia Doung @in.trospectionist from Destructive Steps Dance Association For this session, we are interested in thinking through what it means to belong to, practice, be part of local Street Dance / Hip Hop cultures, or Street Dance / Hip Hop scenes in Australia. The questions we are pondering are about how a dance culture that emerged from the particularities of the African-American and Puerto-Rican experience of youth in a disenfranchised socio-political context has been globalised, and when taken up in different places around the globe, like Australia, been in turn localised into the specific context of the new locale. What is the generational, generative, and generous pull Street Dance / Hip Hop cultures have on a global scale? How can we think about the relationship between the (g)localised dance culture and its black cultural roots? What place does it occupy within Australia or within different cities in Australia? How does it afford its practitioners a sense of belonging to a local as well as global dance community? What are the challenges and tensions inherent in this dynamic? Event info: Wednesday, April 19 2023 from 6:30pm-7:30pm AEST in Studio 221, Building 864 Dance Building 234 St Kilda Road Southbank, VIC 3006 The event is free, but you have to register via Eventbrite here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/generative-dancing-glocal-street-dance-cultures-in-australia-tickets-570281476247?aff=odcleoeventsincollection&keep_tld=1 Image credit: JNY Photography @photography.jny</image:caption>

<image:caption>Julie has worked closely with Nikki Watson (CoDa Dance Company) in the devising and delivering of creative dance workshops for participants with MS, Parkinsons, Stroke-Recovery and various other neurological diseases. Workshops consists of the use of imagery-based improvised movement ideas that encourage the participants to explore using various body parts to move in other ways. In each session, we hope to also encourage participants to enjoy movement, dance, being creative and connecting with others. She and Nikki are in the process of creating a syllabus that can be shared with other support groups and community centres. Currently, Julie is lead dance artist in teaching creative dance and mind-body centreing workshops to participants of the North Kensington Stroke Recovery Group at St. Charles’ Hospital. She has been working with them since January 2015.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In November and December of 2015, Julie and Nikki Watson co-facilitated the Moving:Music Project for six weeks with participants with PMLD from TowerProject. As professional dance artists for Create, Julie and Nikki devised and delivered creative dance workshops with the outcome of a performance at the Half Moon Theatre. Participants explored imagery-based movement ideas, musical rhythms, various forms of contact, mind-body centreing exercises and the creation of a new performance work. The focus for the dance work was not only to explore movement ideas but also develop a sense of community support and teamwork. To find out more about this project, check out Julie Ann’s interview with TowerProject about the process and ideas behind the project. The participants performed the piece on 17 December 2015 as part of UK Disability History Month From the December 2015, the Moving:Music - Dance Project was such a success that support to continue the project took place. In May 2016, Julie and Nikki began working again with participants with PMLD from TowerProject to further develop the movement ideas previous explored, but in more depth. The focus for this project consisted of ways in which various contact skills used in dance can encourage participants to communicated, engage participants with one another and develop relationships. Julie and Nikki worked with the participants to create a new dance work that focused on movement memory, individual artistic voice, contact skills, communication skills and individual movement vocabulary, and the beautiful relationships between participants. There was a performance at the Half Moon Theatre on Thursday, 2 June 2016.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Architecture of Autonomy, a project created and led by Kristina Walsh, culminates in an artistic film that vignettes powerful expressions of individual and collective movement. Through the lens of Mae Sass, five female performers are transported across evolving landscapes. The movement direction of choreographer Cathy Waller, original music composed by saxophonist Trish Clowes, and dream-like garments from womenswear designer ROBERTS|WOOD are blended into a meditative, ethereal experience.
